What is the “Tea Party”?
The name Tea Party comes from the acronym for “Taxed Enough Already” and reflects the fact that it is an apolitical grass-roots movement, founded by ordinary citizens, who are unhappy with the political direction in which Washington is moving the country. While generally conservative in outlook, members of the Tea Party do not specifically align with, endorse or support any particular party or political philosophy. Rather its members believe in the following key principles and come from all parts of the political spectrum:* Limited, Constitutional Government As the Founding Fathers knew only too well, government must be limited so as to protect the liberties of the people. The trend in recent years has been for the federal government to grow not only in size, but also in scope; encroaching into areas in which it has neither a role nor constitutional authority. We believe that federal government should be restricted to those functions defined in our Constitution, and that all other functions belong to the States. * Fiscal Responsibility Government cannot derive income by its own actions; therefore it can only spend money that it has first taken from the private citizens who earn it. The trend in recent years has been for the federal government to rely on deficit spending and consequently to run up huge debts that can only be repaid by future generations. This practice must stop. We believe that it is the responsibility of the Federal Government to cut its spending so that it can live within its means and, in the medium term, balance the Nation’s budget. * Personal Responsibility With liberty comes responsibility and the duty of every citizen in a free society is to take responsibility for their own actions, while respecting the rights of others. The trend in recent years has been for people to demand that “the government fix it” instead. We believe that individual responsibility, not more government, is the course that this country needs to follow.
